Sproul Plaza UC Berkeley
Ode to Mario Savio @ Sproul Plaza UC Berkeley Ca Campus
“There is a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious,
makes you so sick at heart, that you can’t take part; you can’t even passively
take part, and you’ve got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the
wheels, upon the levers, upon all the apparatus, and you’ve got to make it
stop. And you’ve got to indicate to the people who run it, to the people who
own it, that unless you’re free, the machine will be prevented from working at
all!”

These words sparked what is known as the Free Speech Movement. There in
the middle of Sproul Plaza, commemorated in stone, a proud display of history.
” This soil and the air space extending above it shall not be a part of any nation
and shall not be subject to any entity’s jurisdiction”

I decided to test the theory and see if Berkeley was
as free, progressive, and politically correct as they
would like to be. What I found is that inside that
incredible microcosm that exist inside the greater
microcosm of the Bay area, still today has work to do.
